Sanding is a process of smooth finishing surface using sand or sandpaper. The process is relatively easy.

However, when dealing with small spaces like crevices, you may find it a bit challenging.

This does not mean that you cannot complete the task as a DIY project.

All you have to do is get the right sanding tool and follow the manufacturer’s instruction.

Below is a guide on how I managed to sand small crevices as a DIY successfully.

How to sand small crevices

Below is a step by step guide on how to conduct the process

Step 1: Choose the best sanding material for the task

The first and perhaps most important step is choosing the best sanding material.

Here, it would help if you considered all the available options, their qualities, and downsides.

This information will help you make the best choice. Below are some common types of sanding materials;

• Sandpaper- this is the most common tools used for working on small crevices with hands. It would help if you chose sandpaper with a good grit number. The higher the grit number, the better the quality of the sandpaper.

• Sanding blocks- these sanding materials help put even pressure on the right conners. They also maintain a flatter surface. You can also choose to make a customized sanding block instead of purchasing one. All you have to do is create a moulding, then use adhesive on it and stick a sheet of sanding paper to it. Use a putty knife to press it on the block.

• Folded sandpaper- this is a better option if you want to fold it into a sharp, knife-like edge. This type is excellent also because it can fit in tight places.

I prefer folded sandpaper for small crevices. It would also be wise to get clog-resistant sandpaper. This is because it can last up to four times longer than its counterparts.

Step 2: The handed sanding equipment

You also have to choose the best handed sanding equipment. You will need this tool for flattening.

Step 3: Make foam pads

The next step is to make foam pads. Here, you will need flexible foams. Make sure you adjust the variety of shapes on sanders.

Step 4: Sticking the sanding paper to a knife

Here, you can use a regular knife. Doing this will help you reach the exact corners you want to sand.

This is the reason I recommend folded sandpaper, as it can fold and stick well to the knife.

Before doing this, you may want to try out contour sanding grips. Using these will help save your fingers from unexpected accidents.

Step 5: Start sanding

Here, all you have to do is rub the sandpaper over the tiny crevices. Keep at it until you achieve the desired results.

Conclusion: How to sand small crevices

The procedure for how to sand small crevices depends on the type of sanding material you are using.

Most of the time, sandpaper is a good option.

However, you may want to look at the wide range of options first. Once you have the suitable material, the process is relatively easy.
